Dear Mr. Cromeens:
There’s no place like home.
Okay, so that was a terribly cliché opening to my cover letter. If
I ever led a story like that, my editor would probably kill me. Yet, when I came
across the Reporter-News’ job opening for a new sports reporter, that old and
tired line was the first thing to pop into my head.
Although I spent most of my childhood moving from place to place,
Abilene was like my surrogate hometown. I spent countless summers with my
grandparents, who have owned the same little house on the south side of town
since I was born. I listened to my dad regale me with stories from his days on
the swim team at Cooper High School, where he earned his diploma in
1976.
While the swim stories got old after a few decades, my fondness
for the Abilene hasn’t. I feel that working for the Reporter-News would be a
perfect match to my career plans and desires.
Then again, I think I’d be a perfect fit for the paper as well.
Since July of 2007, I’ve been employed at The Garden City Telegram, a daily
newspaper located in Western Kansas. In addition to using this time to become an
accomplished reporter and writer, I also gained valuable experience in various
other medium including radio, web page maintenance and video editing. I was also
honored by the Kansas Press Association in their most recent newspaper contest,
receiving second-place in sports column writing and honorable mention in the
sports features category among writers at medium sized
dailies.
I feel confident that my skills and abilities would be a perfect
match at the Reporter-News and look forward to your response. If you have any
other questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at (620)290-6422 or by
e-mail at mmoore02@hotmail.com.
Oh, and I’ll spare you the line I thought up about the ruby
slippers. That would just be over the top.
Sincerely,
Marshall Moore
